Top 10 VST Instruments
 Posted: 04/10/09 @ 10:06
Just incase anyone was curious.. my 10 favorite VST Instruments. In order Happy.

#10 - Albino 3

http://www.linplug.com/Instruments/Albino_3/albino_3.htm

I use this synth a lot in my beats. More than even some of the one's later in this list. It's just so easy and quick to load up and start playing. It uses minimal CPU power, so you can have multiple running simultaneously with no lag/slow down. The sounds aren't the best, but they're by no means bad. They can add a nice warmth to a mix, and are perfect for doubling up over violins or even a bassline.

#9 - Vanguard

http://refx.com/?lang=en&page=products/vanguard/summary

An excellent synth. If this was based on preset patches, this one may have not even made the list, but after extensive use, you can only begin to realise the capabilities of this instrument. You can generate a massive array of sounds using this, and I've heard reFX have released plug-in patches that extends that so I will have to look into that, but overall this is an excellent synth and one worth looking into.

#8 - Atmosphere

http://www.spectrasonics.net/instruments/atmosphere.html

This is a producers dream. The sounds in this instrument add the perfect sparkle to any composition. With over a thousand sounds and layer elements, you could spend eternity tweaking the perfect sound. All the sound samples are of high quality and sound absolutely fantastic. I'd recommend it most for film scores, but it's applications are endless: hip hop, pop, punk, rock..

#7 - Edirol Orchestral

http://www.roland.com/products/en/HQ-OR/

If you're making symphonic/orchestral music, then this has absolutely everything you need. Flutes, violins, violas, drums, cellos, trumpets, clarinet's & more. The sounds aren't the highest quality, but they're good enough to sit well in a mix.. and there's enough variety that with careful layering you can make a very convincing full orchestra sound. It's great!

#6 - SampleTron

http://www.ikmultimedia.com/sampletron/features/

This is another personal favorite. I just absolutely love the sound of the Mellotron. You can use the sounds in a wide range of applications, and they really carry that authentic "Tron" feel. You can just tell that the samples are all of a high quality. Definitely a recommendation to check out.

#5 - Predator

http://www.robpapen.com/predator.html

Rob Papen certainly knows what he's doing when it comes to VST synth's. His first creation (Albino) is #10 on this list, and Predator is a whole different ballgame. Featuring a huge library of synths, leaps, pads, basses and effects, suitable for use in an almost limitless list of applications. You can tweak and alter every aspect of the synthesis generation process, meaning there's virtually inifnite sounds capable of being produced by this gem.

#4 - ReFX Nexus

http://refx.com/?lang=en&page=products/nexus/summary

Nexus is mainly intended for dance/trance music, and it's very clear from the moment you open it, but among it's 4GB sound library (over 880 sounds!) is a host of high quality synths and other sound elements, that would fit well into a lot of different styles of music. The sounds are of exceptional quality, and the evidence of that is in the CPU load (meaning if you don't have a powerful computer don't even bother with this one). If you do however have a powerful computer, this instrument can work wonders for your mixes.

#3 -Thor

http://www.propellerheads.se/products/reason/

This one is available as a part of Propllerhead's Reason. Personally, I don't use Reason to make beats. I have played around with it though and just felt it wasn't for me. It does feature some great synth options, such as the Malstrom and the remarkable Thor. When I first tried Thor out, I just loved it straight away. The gritty, grungy, dirty, deep bass I felt in the first preset I loaded up nearly blew my mind. If I did ever start using Reason, this synth would definitely be a major factor.

#2 - Rapture

http://www.cakewalk.com/products/rapture/default.asp

There's something about 'Cakewalk' in the music industry that just oozes with quality. They just always seem to get things done right, and Rapture is a perfect example of that. This instrument features a wide range of basses, leads, pads and fx that can freshen up any mix that sounds empty or unfinished. It also offers extensive sound manipulation options so you will never run out of options. Definitely something I use often in my beats.

#1 - Sonik Synth 2

http://www.ikmultimedia.com/soniksynth/features/

My #1 pick! I use this instrument in nearly everything I make. It's got great basses, synths, strings, trumpets. It is an all-in-one VST, and every single sound in this package sounds fantastic. It also has a range of FX plug-ins such as Reverbs, Delays, EQ's etc. so you can tweak and modify all the sounds even further. I can't really explain how useful this is any further so simply go out and buy it. Now. You won't regret it.
