Elusive On: Advanced Lyricism
 Posted: 04/10/09 @ 10:07
Most of the articles I write are intended to help beginners get a basic understanding of terms and methodology. However, if you're interested in advanced lyricism and rhyming, here's some food for thought.

Quote:
I'm automatic, spit static then go bananas,
Like it matters who you are, I'll still be holding those golden hammers,
Showing rappers up, you know it, a soldier that knows his map and,
If you're wakk I won't be stoppin till all of your throats are slashed,
But for now, I'm insane, and I'm just letting the moment lapse,
Like when I bust out of my coffin, put you in it and close it back,
Then get my nuts out, on top it, give me a minute, I've showed you half,
Cause when I come down, there's no stopping this sinister showmans laughs,
What? You couldn't predict the complexity,
I write a thousand lines a day, the shits a breath to me,
Spit as dark as night, the sun completes the recipe,
And sparks, the flame ignites, so much you'll be an effegy,
My rhymes are so advanced, I'm spitting in the 4th dimension,
Every line I say just goes beyond your comprehension,
All I need to do I speak and I've got your attention,
I won't sell out till I die, then I'll be touring heaven,
Tore your heart in four, I didn't mean start a war,
Till they found you dead, the ground as red as pasta sauce,
Face the darkest force, the opposite of argonauts,
Psychopaths, then the lightning crashes, call me Thor..

From my first verse on "Hot".

I don't have that much time, but I will quickly analyse some of the rhyme schemes and structures used in this verse. From the start, the verse is flourishing with inner-rhymes and multi's, and the first 8 lines use an evolving rhyme structure.

Quote:
/Automatic/ /Static/ /Bananas/ /Matters/ /Hammers/ /Rappers/ /Map, and/
/Wakk/ /Slashed/ /Lapse/ /Back/ /Half/ /Laughs/

There's also several additional multi's used throughout those lines, such as 'go-ban(anas)', 'holding', 'golden', 'showing', 'know it', 'soldier', 'knows his'.. and so on.

The next 4 lines feature a consistent end-line multi syllable rhyme. '(Com)plexity', 'breath to me', 'recipe' and 'effegy. The last two of this four also has some additional inner rhymes. 'Dark as night', 'sparks, (the flame) ignites', and 'sun completes', 'so much you'll be'. Many of the rhymes used in this verse are made to fit better when performed vocally, based on the pronounciation.

The last 8 lines follow the same general structure described here. It gets mixed up and modified slightly, particularly in the last 4 lines.

Quote:
/Heart in four/ /Start a war/ /Pasta sauce/ /Darkest force/ /Argonauts/
/(Imperfect) call me Thor/
/Found you dead/ /Ground as red/
/Psychopaths/ /Lightning crashes/

Well, that's about as much explanation of my rhymes as I have time for right now. I hope it's offered some aspiring lyricists some new ideas and methods they may be able to implement, and I hope it has offered other people a bit more understanding into what goes into putting a verse together, and the amount of effort I put into writing my own songs.
